“E is for Ernest, who choked on a peach…” I guess in this case, the importance of being Ernest is in knowing not to eat something you’re allergic to, which will cause your airways to close up, cutting off your supply of oxygen. And this was before the invention of the Epi Pen, so he didn’t have any help close enough at hand to stop his deadly allergic reaction. Maybe next time his mother tells him to stay out of the peaches, he’ll listen. Oh wait, he can’t, because now he’s planted in the back yard underneath the peach tree, where he can supply it with nutrients for years to come… so I guess something good came out of this after all—the peach tree will flourish, and Ernest will get to be near his favorite fruit forever…

Apples, oranges, bananas….anything that wouldn’t be automatically fatal…although, the seeds in apples can be poisonous if you eat them raw (they contain small amounts of cyanide, which if you eat one or two of them you’ll be fine, but if you ate a lot of them, or if say someone was trying to poison someone and put them in something that they wouldn’t notice and said “Here, eat/drink this”…. 😛 ) Hmmm, maybe that’s what the deal was with Snow White’s apple, her hag of a stepmother just increased the amount of cyanide in the apple…

Taking your story forward, maybe Ernest haunts the peach tree now, warning any kid to not eat the peaches if they are allergic to them? 😀

I wish I could claim credit for this story, but as stated in Day 1, they’re from Ed Gorey’s “The Gashlycrumb Tinies”, a book meant to teach children the alphabet (and meant as satire, but still…a children’s book? Really? Hence the tag “warped author” 😛 ). Love that idea, though! 😀
