Dancing the Night Away With Friends and Frenemies

“How long have you been standing there?”

“Longer than you’d like.”

“I didn’t know you knew how to do the Macarena, Harry.”

“That’s what happens when you go out drinking with Ron, Neville, and Draco…you wind up at the strangest clubs…and anyway, sod off, Hermione, I saw you in a conga line last weekend with the girls.”

“Yes, well, that’s what happens when you go drinking with Ginny, Hannah, and Astoria, so sod off, Harry.”

“So I guess we both make bad choices when going out with our friends…and whatever the hell Draco and Astoria are to us.”

“Frenemies?  They used to be our enemies, at least Draco did, but now they’re our friends?  Or at least we’re trying to be?  We can’t live in the past forever, and they really are trying to put all that behind them, especially Draco.  He’s got a lot to try to live down, not all of it his doing, and we really need to help him with that, or he’ll never be able to get past it all.  He was never evil, Harry, he was just a product of his upbringing who made some really bad choices in an effort to win his father’s approval.  His father was an evil git, but he was still Draco’s father, and for better or worse, Draco loved him and just wanted to be loved and accepted for who he was in return…something I don’t think he ever truly got from Lucius.  Narcissa never made a secret of how much she loved her son and would do anything for him, but if Lucius ever loved him, he managed to keep that secret the entire time Draco was growing up.”

“I know all that, Hermione, and I really am trying to get past all that rubbish as well, and let the past be the past.  He didn’t have to say what he did at his trial, he didn’t have to speak up for me, or you, or Ron, but he did, and I think it made all the difference in a lot of the Wizengamot members’ eyes.  I just wish the wizarding public could let the past be the past and let him move on with his life.  They don’t have to forgive him necessarily, I know better than anyone how much that’s asking, but at least be willing to forget and move on, so that he can too.  He shouldn’t have to pay the rest of his life for mistakes he made in the past, no one should.”

“Okay, enough of this maudlin conversation.  Let’s Floo Draco and Astoria and go dancing!”

Harry laughed and shook his head at his best friend.  “You go find Ron and Ginny, I’ll see if they’re home.”

Hermione beamed at Harry before racing out of the room, calling as she went, “Ron!  Ginny!  Get your dancing shoes on, we’re going out!”
